The Armenian Genocide
From 24 April 1915 the Ottoman Young Turk government deported and massacred the empire's Armenian population in death marches toward the Syrian desert; widely recognised as the first genocide of the 20th century, with deaths estimated from roughly 600,000 to as many as 1.5 million.

Squeezed between Turkish nationalist forces and the advancing Red Army, the First Republic fell and Armenia was Sovietised, ending its short-lived independence.

Treaty of Sèvres
The Allied treaty with the defeated Ottoman government proposed partitioning Anatolia among Greece, Armenia, Italy, France and others; rejected by the nationalists, it triggered the War of Independence.
