The figures, side by side

Each figure is the same observation, with the same source, as on the two dossiers. Every value shows the year it was observed — vintages differ by indicator and nation. A “—” is an absence in the source data, never a zero. Metric names link to the world ranking; values open the figure on its own dossier.

  1. late 1930s or early 1940s

Madha's elders choose Muscat; Nahwa stays with Sharjah

According to local oral history, the leaders of the neighbouring ruling families asked the elders of the mountain village of Madha which ruler it wished to follow. Madha chose Oman, reportedly for its perceived wealth, stronger government and the protection of its water, while the nearby village of Nahwa stayed with the Qawasim of Sharjah. The choice left Madha an Omani exclave inside the Trucial Coast with a Sharjah village inside it. The date and the wording of the question are recorded only in oral accounts.
