    Third referendum and Kanak boycott

    The final referendum rejected independence by about 96% to 4%, but turnout was only ~44%: pro-independence parties and most Kanak voters boycotted after France declined to postpone the vote, and the two sides drew opposite conclusions about its legitimacy.
