Schweitzer founds the Lambaréné hospital
Albert Schweitzer and his wife Hélène arrived at Lambaréné on the Ogooué in 1913 and founded a hospital near a mission; it treated thousands and made Lambaréné internationally known. Schweitzer received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.
